On International Women’s Day 2026, NAPE celebrated the courage and leadership of incredible women on the frontlines defending their land, livelihoods and communities against EACOP. These women are greatly affected by the ongoing EACOP activities in the district of Kiboga, Kyankwanzi, Hoima, Kikuube and Mubende where during the celebration in Kiboga, they shared their stories of struggle, resilience and survival amidst the ongoing EACOP activities in their communities. Their resilience inspired and given courage to the rest of communities with the same challenges.

NAPE involved the women in the dialogue where they discussed how they are being affected by the EACOP project i.e. from environmental degradation to limited access to resources and opportunities. Yet, despite these challenges, these women are thriving, demonstrating remarkable resilience and determination.

They were hosted on the NAPE Community Green Radio studio where they shared their stories and discussed ways of survival. The women spoke eloquently about their struggles from coping with the impacts of EACOP to navigating patriarchal societies. They also shared their hopes for the future emphasizing the need for greater inclusion and participation in decision-making processes. Betty Ninsiima-Gender Officer at NAPE, noted that there is an increase in misconceptions about International Women’s Day where some people still choose to celebrate it as Mother’s Day. Betty noted that International Women’s Day was meant for celebrating women’s contributions towards environmental conservation, social justice and community development as well as advocating for more action towards gender equality. The NAPE Community Green radio is empowering women in the oil region to amplify their voices, advocate for their rights, and demand accountability and justice.

As we celebrate Women’s Day, it is clear that these women are leading the charge for change. They are not just survivors but they are champions of gender equality and advocates for their rights. Their stories remind us that women’s empowerment is not just a goal but a collective responsibility.

The theme of this year’s Women’s Day, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls” focusing on dismantling structural barriers and ensuring legal equality. Additionally, the 2026 campaign theme often used for corporate and community events, is “Give to Gain” highlighting the power of investment, mentorship and support in accelerating progress which resonates deeply with the experiences of these women. It is a call to action urging us to work together to create a more just and equitable world.

As we reflect on the progress made, we are reminded that there is still much work to be done. The Global Gender Gap Report noted that it will take 134 years to achieve full gender parity but we are not deterred. We are inspired by the women of Kiboga, Kyankwanzi, Hoima, Kikuube, and Mubende who show us that collective action can drive change.

Let us continue to amplify the voices of women especially those in marginalized communities. Let us work together to create a world where every woman can thrive free from inequality and discrimination.
